My style is to create a palette which tells the story without cluttering the frame with unnecessary gimmicks. You have to lay back and give the story room to breathe rather than put the cool shot or visual first. A natural environment creates freedom of expression on screen without the feeling of “putting on a show.”
I use long lens and mixed media when possible so we’re almost invisible while always covering all the key moments that create great story.
It’s important to empower those around me to have input into the creative process. Situational awareness is the key, you don’t know where or who the next great idea is coming, but if you listen with an open mind, it will come to you.
Within that framework there is definitely room for huge visual impact, but that needs to be driven by and contribute to the narrative in a meaningful way. Production value is huge but is empty without story.
